Fantastic news! More countries need to take similar steps. This might bring up the total marine protected areas up to 1%. We should shoot for 12%, the amount of land that is protected.

The Marine Park will not last. Mauritius has a legal claim to the islands and the British have made no effort to convince Mauritians of its environmental necessity. When the NGO I work for asked the British High Commission in Mauritius to work with us promoting The End of the Line we received the following response:

Thank you for the proposition. After consulting 'the powers that be', I regret to say that we will be unable to go forward with it. However, we encourage you to show the film around as much as possible as the last few weeks have demonstrated that there are many negative perceptions on the objectives of marine parks.

I wish to applaud the British government for this action; continued studies will not help the environment, a "no-take" stand will definitely move our world forward. Politicians respond to what we, as voting persons, tell them to do. Let's tell more of them that this is the behaviour desired and expected.

I think that this is absolutely fantastic. We're facing a serious issue here, and some steps forward such as this one, are a head in the right direction. I applaud the U.K on it's righteous decision.

There are not plenty of fish in the sea,

Luke.
