The End of the Line is going to appear on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square!

Well, in reality Oliver Parsons-Baker, Senior Water Quality Advisor for Severn Trent Water, will stand on the Fourth Plinth on Tuesday 7th July, dress as a fish to promote the important issues contained in The End of the Line as part of the One&Other Project.

The project, in partnership with Sky Arts, is the brainchild of artist Antony Gormley, famed for his 20ft-high Angel of the North sculpture that overlooks the A1, near Newcastle.

He is asking 2,400 people to occupy the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square for one hour each between 6th July and 14th October 2009. So far nearly 15,000 people have applied for one of the 2,400 hour long slots.

Oliver will be standing on the Fourth Plinth between 10am and 11am on Tuesday 7th July. He will spend the first 30 minutes publicising the work that Water Aid does, and the second half an hour dressed as a fish, promoting The End of the Line.

Speaking about why he wanted to publicise the film, Oliver said: “I read The End of the Line in 2006 after I was introduced to the book by a fisheries lecturer at King’s College.

“Having seen first-hand the impact that industrial scale fishing has on the marine environment through studying marine biology, I thought it was terrific to finally have someone bringing the issue to a wider audience.

“What was different about The End of the Line compared with other environmental books at the time was how it introduced simple but effective ways in which we, as consumers, can make a contribution to reversing the crisis.

“The fact that the solutions involve the engagement of a mass audience is really why I wanted to link up with the team behind the documentary.

“I want to use the amazing platform of the One&Other Project and the Fourth Plinth to deliver the key messages of the film to as many people as possible.

“In this way I hope to play a part, albeit a small one, in moving towards real, tangible improvements in our oceans, their inhabitants and the populations that depend on them.”

Members of the film team will also be in attendance at Trafalgar Square and the film is being screened that evening in London at The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square, the Odeon in Panton Street and at the Gate Picturehouse in Notting Hill.
